I am fascinated by the many ways the American flag appears in our urban landscape. When I began work on this series I photographed a lot of flags. A neglected flag fading, tucked away in a window. Another hung prominently, proudly and yet incorrectly. A wind-torn one flying high above the city street that appeared to have been transported from a ship at sea. However, I soon realized that the most unique images were ones that I shot standing directly under the flags and looking straight up. By doing this, I removed almost all elements from the flag's surroundings, and transformed my subject from an icon into something more recognizable as say, a flower. Throughout this series, I have continued to capture the effects of wind and light as they change the flag.
